Curtis Samuel gives Panthers dynamic offensive playmaker to pair with Christian McCaffrey

The Carolina Panthers got a versatile offensive playmaker when they drafted Ohio States Curtis Samuel with the 40th overall pick.

Having won a national championship, All-American recognition, and three pairs of Golden Pants [for beating Michigan], there really wasnt anything more for McMillan to accomplish in Columbus. His name will almost assuredly be announced in the first two days of the NFL Draft this April. Regardless of how his career turns out at the next level, one things is clear: McMillan deserves to have his name mentioned aside the best Ohio State linebackers of all time.

The Chicago Bears moved up to No. 2 in the 2017 NFL draft shortly after the Cleveland Browns selected Myles Garrett with the No. 1 pick.

The San Francisco 49ers moved back as a result, to the No. 3 pick that the Bears had. With the No. 2 overall pick, the Bears took North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

Eventually, Lewis was picked in the third round by the Dallas Cowboys.

Thomas was picked in last years draft with the No. 47 overall pick to the New Orleans Saints. As a rookie, he had 1,137 yards and nine touchdowns. Over Lewiss four years in Ann Arbor, he accounted for 135 tackles and six interceptions. Arent college football rivalries, especially the ones like Ohio State-Michigan, just the best?

And the problem with going to the NFL is that the way of thinking has changed. Quarterbacks now are expected to come in right away and play. It didnt used to be like that. Teams obviously thought I was going to be a project, one that was going to take too long compared to the other guys.

Browns torn between Myles Garrett, Mitchell Trubisky for top pick

Myles Garrett has been penciled in as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft for weeks.

The Browns, who have two first-round picks, are expected to take the Texas A&M defensive end first and then come back to use the No. 12 selection on a quarterback like Clemson’s Deshaun Watson or Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes.

And the trend goes deeper than that. Of the last 10 teams to play in the Super Bowl — which includes two appearances each by the Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and Denver Broncos — 62 percent of first-round picks in the four years leading up to their respective appearances were used on defensive players, compared to the league average of 52 percent.

Just 14 percent of those picks were used on offensive skill-position players, nearly half of the league average of 27 percent.

So if the teams at the top of the standings focus on defense to excellent results, why would the rest of the NFL not follow suit? Why continue to draft offensive skill players when it doesn’t seem to yield championship-level rosters?

Well to get to the Super Bowl, a team typically requires two things: A quarterback and a defense.

The last four Super Bowls featured Tom Brady twice, Russell Wilson twice, Peyton Manning twice, Matt Ryan after an MVP season, and Cam Newton after an MVP season. For teams with such dynamic options under center, quarterback hasn’t had to be an option early and the boost that comes with a skill-position player isn’t necessary.

The Houston Texans announced they would sign former wide receiver Andre Johnson to a one-day contract, allowing him to retire as a member of the team.

According to the Texans, Johnson will be honored at a press conference on Wednesday, April 19 at NRG Stadium. Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer Cal McNair and Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Rick Smith will be in attendance to honor Johnson.

Johnson spent the last two seasons of his career making trips to other AFC South teams in the Colts and Titans. In 2015, He started in 14 of 16 games for the Colts, going just over 500 yards receiving with four touchdowns. This past season, he started three games for the Titans, and had just 85 yards with two touchdowns.

SB Nation鈥檚 Louis Bien took a look at Johnson鈥檚 career after he announced his retirement in October, and pointed out just how darn good he actually was.

“He did a helluva job on the defensive end, came in and made a big shot for us,” Smith said. “He did what he was supposed to do.”

Smith finished with three points on 1-for-3 shooting and one turnover in 19 minutes, while Shumpert had five points in 20 minutes.

Smith said he wanted to go back into Monday’s game, but the team held him out.

Manning remains the key to the team, a player who can use the offense’s various weapons to attack every level of the field. When a team cheats into the box to stop Wes Welker, he’ll go over the top to Demaryius Thomas. When both are covered, Manning will find tight end Julius Thomas. Teams need to choose where their gaps will be, making it a near-impossible matchup.

Defensively, the Broncos are a talented team that generates a lot of pressure while protecting Manning. Denver has 26 sacks while allowing 13. The defensive key has been linebacker Shaun Phillips, who shouldered the burden while Von Miller was gone to start the season, with 7.5 total sacks.

But the Americans are still one really bad slip-up away from being in deep trouble. These odds will probably look the same after June鈥檚 two games 鈥?at home against T&T and away to Mexico 鈥?but a home qualifier against Costa Rica in September is hardly a gimme win. The USMNT wouldn鈥檛 even need to play that poorly to walk away from that game and the one in Honduras four days later with just one point. Those are tough enough matches that a couple of bad bounces or bad calls by the officials could make the difference.

The USMNT is now favored to get to the World Cup, but they still have a lot of work left to do. Those two November losses to Mexico and Costa Rica put them in a serious hole.

One Super Bowl bonus for Giants’ fans, regardless of whether or not the Giants get there, could be the likely inclusion of former Giants great Michael Strahan in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Strahan is a semi-finalist, and the enshrinees will be announced Feb. 1, the day before the Super Bowl game.

“That would be great if it comes to fruition. I was quite frankly a little surprised that he didn’t get in last year because I’m not sure what more you have to do to be considered a Hall of Fame candidate,” Mara said

Given that we should not have expected anything, Tolzien was okay on Sunday. Given that turnovers are extremely costly, we can’t ignore three interceptions either. What choice do the Green Bay Packers have and would it really be all that easy to just plug Matt Flynn back under center after seeing what we’ve seen the last two seasons?

McCarron is a valuable member of our football team

Ohio State QB commitment Emory Jones recently took a quiet visit to Georgia that he didn’t discuss. But he did talk about upcoming visits to Florida, Florida State, and Alabama. He also told me why he is taking other visits, what Ohio State’s coaches think about his trips despite being committed, and gave a percentage on his level of commitment of the Buckeyes. This could be a situation to watch.

Germain Ifedi Limited Jersey AJ McCarron is another interesting trade target. The Bengals backup quarterback has not seen much of the field in his career, but he did nearly lead his team to a playoff win in 2016 if not for a few boneheaded penalties by the defense. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis tried to silence any rumors around McCarron at the NFL owners meeting last week.

“McCarron is a valuable member of our football team,” Lewis said. “No one has asked to trade him so we’re not going to trade away AJ McCarron and we’re not going to go out and seek a trade for AJ McCarron.”

But just like with Garoppolo, McCarron could still be traded away if a team is willing to pay the right price for him. “What we’ve been able to do the last two, three weeks has been a good reminder of exactly what we’re all capable of, and it’s no slight to [Durant],” Curry said via Bleacher Report. “When he’s back, we’re a much better team. We want him back as soon as possible. But what we’ve done in his absence, and how I’ve tried to help contribute at a high level, speaks for itself, really.”

At the rate Golden State is blowing through opponents, imaging how scary this Warriors team will be once Durant returns.

The motion, filed in U.S. District Court in Texas, claims that “as a general rule, universities do not have a legal duty to protect their students from harm caused by other students.”

According to the motion, the school’s attorneys filed based on the grounds of statute of limitations.

The lawsuit was filed by a woman in January, who claims she was raped by former Baylor football players Tre’Von Armstead and Shamycheal Chatman, adding to the allegations in the Baylor sexual assault scandal that ended up costing Art Briles his job as Baylor head coach.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the woman sued for Title IX and negligence. The paper also reports the suit states that two gang rapes involved 10 or more players. There is also a line in the suit referencing former Baylor assistant coach Kendall Briles, Art’s son.

Jacksonville Jaguars inside linebacker Paul Posluszny has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Posluszny sustained a concussion during the team’s Week 10 win over the Tennessee Titans, and did not practice at all this week. He was unable to pass all of the tests required to play, including the final test on Saturday, hence him being ruled out ahead of the gameday inactive list.

One of the bounce back players this season has been Oklahoma State senior cornerback Justin Gilbert. After a poor 2017 season, Gilbert smartly returned to school and has four interceptions this season. If you recall, Gilbert intercepted Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck and Ryan Tannehill in 2011. Gilbert can be a physical cornerback and has deep speed to keep up. He’ll be tested today by Texas’ Mike Davis, a vertical threat who is a tough matchup at the catch point.
