Colin Kaepernick reportedly will opt out of 49ers contract to become free agent

It appears Colin Kaepernick has played his last game for the 49ers.

ESPN reported Friday that the 29-year-old quarterback will opt out of his contract to test free agency. He can’t make it official until the March 2-7 opt-out period.

The news certainly comes as no surprise. Kaepernick had openly asked for a trade after being benched in 2015. He and the 49ers had revised his existing contract last October, allowing either side to terminate the deal for the remaining year in 2017. He is scheduled to make $14.5 million in base salary next year.

I’m just focused on football, Brady told reporters Wednesday, repeating his answers when asked Monday and Tuesday.

It’s part of the routine this week, just as Brady’s grown accustomed during his previous six Super Bowl preparations.
